1. Insulation Type: Down vs. Synthetic
Down (duck or goose) delivers the best warmth-to-weight ratio and compresses well for travel — 650 to 800 fill power is the practical sweet spot for streetwear. Synthetic insulation (e.g. PrimaLoft or 3M Thinsulate) performs better when wet, dries faster, and costs less per jacket. Choose down for flagship cold-weather pieces and synthetic for wet-weather cities or entry price points. 2. Quilting Pattern
The quilting pattern is not just aesthetics — it determines how insulation stays in place. Horizontal channel quilting is the classic puffer look and the easiest to produce consistently. Diamond and box baffle patterns read more premium and can hold thicker insulation without cold spots. Keep channel width between 3 and 4 inches and match baffle height to your warmth target. Always ask for a quilting sample before bulk production: uneven stitching is the fastest way to make a puffer look cheap.
3. Shell Fabric
Most streetwear puffers use 20D to 40D nylon or polyester ripstop. Lighter 20D fabric feels soft and packs small but tears more easily; 30D to 40D adds durability for daily wear. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish or a 5,000–10,000 mm water-column coating keeps light rain from soaking the insulation. For styling, matte nylon taffeta gives a muted modern streetwear look, while high-gloss nylon leans into the retro 90s puffer vibe.
4. Warmth Rating
Define the target temperature range before production. Lightweight puffers (60–100 g insulation) suit 5°C to 10°C days; midweight (150–200 g) covers 0°C to 5°C; heavyweight (250 g+) handles -10°C and below. For down, state warmth honestly by combining fill power with fill weight (e.g. 700 FP / 200 g). 5. Hood Design
A functional hood matters more in winter streetwear than people admit. Insulated hoods with an adjustable drawcord keep warmth sealed in, while detachable hoods (snap or zip) give two silhouettes from one SKU. Faux-fur trims add a premium fashion touch but complicate care and washing — decide early whether your customer base wants the maintenance. Don't forget a chin guard or tall collar so the zipper never sits against bare skin.
6. Zipper Quality
The zipper is the most-used component on a puffer, so never cheap out on it. Specify YKK or equivalent branded zippers, size #5 to #8 for the front closure. A two-way zipper makes sitting and layering much easier — a detail streetwear buyers notice immediately.
